On Saturday 17 brave souls came out in the bitter cold just for afternoon tea in Headington Baptist Church lounge and yet two hours later they all went home smiling.

The Link Up group, whose aim is to link people in the community with activities, friendship and care, had prepared the lounge with a Tea Shop atmosphere. With the help of a few extra people small tables had been arranged with cloths, novelty teapot table centres and pretty serviettes. Sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and a glorious variety of cakes on traditional cake stands were lined up on the hatch, bunting was hung and welcoming mobiles and pictures decorated the walls.

The response was lovely. A group from a local care home said that it was a real treat to come out to something and the baking was complimented by everyone . All said they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the buzz of conversation and laughter proved it. Two ladies stayed long enough after finishing their tea that they were ready to start a second round of cakes!

Some members of the group sat amongst the guests and chatted with them, even attempting some French in order to converse with a french family who arrived. It soon became apparent that they spoke perfectly good English. We were also able to invite some guests to Light Bite, the church’s regular Thursday lunch club.

So, the question now is, if 17 people had such a good time on such a cold afternoon how many people will respond to our invitations if we held another Afternoon Tea in the Summer? We are keen to find out and have unanimously decided to hold another event in a few months time.
