The New to HBC Discipleship Group was launched in the autumn of 2013. Our aim is to welcome newcomers to Headington Baptist Church, to help them integrate into the church, and to support them in their journey of faith. We also hope to help people who are new to Oxford as they settle in here.
Working with the Welcome teams on Sundays, we try to look out for newcomers and chat to them over coffee after the services, answer questions and help to link newcomers up with groups and activities at Headington Baptist Church. We also try to offer hospitality as appropriate.
Our main regular commitment is organising the Welcome Teas, roughly every two months. People who are new to the church are invited to come along on a Sunday afternoon for a presentation about the church’s life – and a delicious tea! Guests can chat to members of the Discipleship Group, Headington Baptist Church leaders and other newcomers in a relaxed atmosphere, ask questions and find out more about the church and their part in it.
We plan from time to time to organise other social activities for newcomers – recently we had a walk in Port Meadow followed by a pub lunch.
As a Discipleship Group we meet regularly on Tuesday evenings for Bible study, prayer and fellowship. We want to encourage one another in our daily lives as we seek to serve God, by praying, and helping in practical ways where possible. Like everyone else we face problems and challenges, and it’s such a blessing to have the support of others in the group.
It’s great that several newcomers have joined the group over the last few months. They have a real desire to welcome people who are new to the church, and want to be part of the New to HBC Discipleship Group as the vehicle for doing that. For other newcomers, other Discipleship Groups will be more appropriate and we aim to make links between them.Share this:
